Why is it I liked it?

Apparently I'm definitely in the minority in my opinion of the game. Given the total investment it is a value. The controls are sensitive and that can be frustrating to newcomers. Once you get "feel" for the game it becomes more intuitive and much easier. My six-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son had difficulty at first, but are now unlocking tracks on their own. The first night I had it, I unlocked all of the tracks and collected enough "chocolate coins" to use any kart in the arsenal. To unlock tracks you simply win on that course in tournament play, then it becomes available for any kind of play. Oddly enough the "house" track, the second or third track you'll race, was (for me) harder than all of the tracks you'll unlock later in the game. Despite another reviewer's criticism, the kart does have reverse by pressing the B button. The B button or A button will apply the brakes. Some of the other criticisms were obviously because the reviewer did not read the enclosed instruction manual. This is not a game that you can just keep the throttle button down the whole time and finish the course. It takes a little finesse, but that is what makes the game challenging and fun. The graphics are not that bad. Of course I am from the Atari generation, so your mileage may vary. I'll agree that the sound effects and commentary do get old. And as others have said there are some dark tunnels on some of the tracks. But overall if you can get it for 15 bucks like I did, you'll get your money's worth. It's really unfair to compare this game to Mario Kart which cost three times as much.
My 8 year old son loves it, but takes some getting used to.

My 8 year old son really wanted this game, so we came to Amazon to check out the reviews. Wow, they were not good. One person even went as far as saying something to the effect that if after reading these reviews you still purchase it, you must not love your child...that review devastated my son! He said he really wanted it, but if buying it for me meant I didn't love him, he didn't want it...watch what you write folks!

We were at K-Mart the other day, my son strayed into the video game area and found this game for $14.99 and asked if we could get it even though the reviews on Amazon weren't good. I agreed to and we have played it 3 nights in a row. He told me last night that this is his favorite game we have and we have several. I asked if he likes it better than Mario Kart and Spider Man Friend or Foe and he said "Yes!"

As for myself, I'm 40 years old and do get frustrated with the game on a couple of the screens, which you have to win to open others. But for the most part, it was worth the money. I do suggest playing it with the wheel, it makes the game more fun and I think it makes the game easier to play too.

So, go with what you think you might like. It's not a big investment and if you, or your child, think you will like it, give it a try...you can always sell it here or on ebay later.
We have enjoy playing it

Our family has enjoyed this game. It is definitely a bit tricky at first, but our 4 year old and 6 year old have mastered it and love playing it.
Not so bad

I purchased this game expecting Mario Kart, but that it isn't. However, if you go into it with that in mind you will probably enjoy it. The controls are a little sensitive, and that takes some time getting used to, but that is half the fun of the game. My husband is really good at it and loves it. My 4 year old also loves it. I think that for $15 it was a great purchase!
Not as bad as others claim

My son received this in his stocking, and we have really enjoyed it in fact he's begging me at this very moment to put it back in the machine. we do not own any other racing wii games to compare it to though.
The controls have to be held with a super light hand, I myself have played it numerous times.
I do agree it is hard to navigate some courses and the course is NOT marked well on most courses.
As far as the reverse, press the B button and it will reverse you.
My main complaints would be the controls are light to the touch meaning you dont' have to do much with the control to have your car go crazy. and the steering wheel in reverse mode (again use the B button to reverse) is not like when you are driving a real car, it is the opposite.
My likes would be, it's not violent, and there are lots and lots of tracks and game styles to choose from. I paid $14.99 at K-mart and thought it was worth the money as another game to add to our growing collection.
It certainly is not the best game out there but was fun for a cheap game. Maybe you should rent it before you buy it to see if you like it. A lot will have to do with your own skill with the remote and driving games.
